Custom Steel Enclosures for Dalco Engineering
Container Conversions for Gas Generation Systems
When Dalco Engineering, a trusted name in gas generation systems, needed custom steel enclosures for a high-specification nitrogen production project, they turned to Eldapoint. The project required precision manufacturing and an understanding of the logistical and environmental challenges involved in an international deployment.
With a solid track record of delivering industrial enclosures, specialist containers and portable buildings across a wide range of industries, you’ll find Eldapoint builds in action across the globe – from busy industrial hubs to the most remote and challenging locations on Earth. Our group solutions have been deployed as far afield as Afghanistan, Eastern Australia, Suez and perhaps most impressively, the frozen extremes of Antarctica as a bespoke housing unit for a scientific survey mission. Wherever robust engineering meets a real-world challenge, Eldapoint delivers – from desert heat to polar ice, and everywhere in between.
Project Overview
Eldapoint manufactured eight bespoke steel enclosures, each measuring 40’ x 10’ x 10’, tailored to Dalco’s specific requirements. Once fabricated at Eldapoint’s UK facilities, the units were shipped to Ireland, where Dalco completed the internal fit-out. From there, the enclosures were transported to Mexico, where they support an industrial application for the end user.
This multi-stage journey – from design to fabrication, fit-out, and final deployment, demanded exceptional attention to detail, rigorous construction standards, and built-in adaptability to meet regional requirements.
The Challenge: Enclosing a Complete Nitrogen Generation and Compression System
A nitrogen gas generation system is a highly specialised piece of industrial equipment typically operating in tandem with a dedicated compressor unit. Together, these two components form a critical system that requires protection and stability to perform reliably in demanding environments.
The generator and compressor units work together to produce a reliable, on-demand supply of high-purity nitrogen gas for industrial use. This combined system is commonly used in sectors such as Food and Beverage, Pharmaceuticals and Petrochemicals as a cost-effective, continuous alternative to bottled nitrogen.
Whether installed within a controlled indoor setting or deployed in a remote, rugged location, the enclosures that house both the generator and compressor must be purpose-built to meet strict technical, environmental, and operational standards. These are not just protective shells – they’re essential to the system’s long-term safety and efficiency.
Key Features
Here are several key features that define a high-quality enclosure for nitrogen generation and compression units…
1. Structural Strength and Durability
Both the nitrogen generator and its compressor counterpart are heavy-duty systems that operate continuously under load. Their enclosures must be fabricated from fully welded steel, often incorporating 6mm checker plate flooring for enhanced load-bearing strength. The structure must withstand vibration, impacts, and frequent handling, while corrosion-resistant finishes – such as epoxy primers or marine-grade paint – protect the unit from long-term environmental exposure.
2. Climate Control & Ventilation
Maintaining a stable internal environment is vital for the performance and safety of both units. Compressor equipment, in particular, generates significant heat. That’s why enclosures should be equipped with dedicated HVAC systems – such as 60Hz 7.5kW air conditioning units designed for regional power compatibility.
To ensure adequate ventilation and cooling, louvres, vents, or sand traps can be added to maintain airflow and prevent dust or debris ingress – crucial for both air quality and component longevity.
3. Environmental Protection
These systems are deployed in a cross-section of environments, ranging from industrial zones to deserts or coastal locations. To perform reliably in such varied settings, the enclosures must offer protection from sand, salt, moisture, and temperature extremes. Features like manually adjustable sand trap louvres, weather-sealed doors, and insulated panels help shield the internal components from the elements.
4. Safety and Accessibility
Operational safety and serviceability are core priorities. Enclosures should include fire-rated emergency exit doors, internal lighting, and clearly marked access points. Both the nitrogen generator and compressor require periodic maintenance, so the enclosure layout must allow technicians to easily reach filters, control panels, piping, and service ports without obstruction.
5. Mobility and Transport Readiness
Nitrogen generation systems are increasingly deployed as modular or mobile units. For this reason, enclosures must be built with ISO corner blocks, lifting points, and reinforced frames to allow safe, secure transportation over land and sea. This level of design flexibility makes the systems suitable for global deployment and remote-site installation.
The Solution: Technical Details
No two applications are the same. Eldapoint can tailor its enclosures to accommodate auxiliary systems, electrical switchgear, noise reduction panels, ATEX-rated components, or additional compartments for storage or controls. Custom layouts and configurations ensure the housing complements the nitrogen system’s performance, not restricts it.
